UMB Celebrates Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month Feb. 6, 2024 at Noon in Leadership Hall

On Feb 6, 2024, the University of Maryland, Baltimore's annual Martin Luther King Jr and Black History Month celebration featured keynote speaker Fatima Goss Graves, JD, President and CEO of the National Women's Law Center.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is at the forefront of supporting the biomedical research industry in Baltimore.UMB and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) were jointly awarded a four-year, $4 million Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hubs (REACH) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advance the biomedical entrepreneurship and innovation economy in the Baltimore region.This grant will be used to build on the work that began when UMBC and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) received a $13 million NIH Common Fund Faculty Institutional Recruitment for Sustainable Transformation (FIRST) grant in 2022 to enhance recruitment and training of junior faculty from groups underrepresented in biomedical science.UMB will also use the grant to create the University of Maryland, Baltimore Life Science Discovery (UM-BILD) Accelerator program’s “proof-of-concept” hub — one of only five NIH-funded proof-of-concept hubs in the U.S. — in the University of Maryland BioPark and at bwtech@UMBC.Jim Hughes, chief enterprise and economic development officer and senior vice president for UMB, spoke to the Baltimore Mayor and City Council recently about the impact of the grant.

The Embrace Resource Center is now open at 55 N. Paca St., in the Baltimore Grand Garage.In the past three years, a program with a home of its own at this new center, has helped engage 4,000 people, assisted 200 people find employment, and also helped 130 people get into drug treatment, with 120 actively in treatment. This is all taking place around Baltimore's Lexington Market and Eutaw Street beside the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus.Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott celebrated the center's opening on Jan. 26, 2024, with UMB President Bruce E. Jarrell, and Embrace Executive Director Kyla Liggett-Creel.

On Jan. 30, 2024 the University of Maryland School of Social Work community and others from the Univesity of Maryland, Baltimore gathered to hear all about plans for the School's new building. Dean Judy Postmus and Facilities chief Anna Borgerding answered questions about sustainability, flexibility, access, and other issues.Groundbreaking is expected to take place in fall 2024 with a targeted opening of fall 2027.

Christmas shopping is made easy for West Baltimore families through the annual Christmas Store.The annual store makes parents the “heroes of Christmas” by providing an opportunity for them to purchase brand new toys and other holiday presents for their loved ones at a deeply discounted price. The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) 2023 Holiday Craft Fair attracted a big crowd to the SMC Campus Center on Dec. 6, with shoppers milling about the Elm Ballrooms looking for gifts or treats and soaking up the festive atmosphere.The 15th annual Holiday Craft Fair featured more than 50 vendors and was held on a Wednesday for the first time. Shoppers could choose from a wide variety of homemade and handmade items, including ornaments and wreaths; jewelry and ready-to-wear crocheted or knitted items; sweaters, cardigans, T-shirts, and sweatshirts; olive oil and balsamic vinegar; treats for humans and dogs; and much more.“The Holiday Craft Fair is one of my favorite days at UMB,” said Nancy Gordon, executive director of protocol and special events, Office of External Relations, who conceived the event 15 years ago and organized it this year along with Alice Powell, director of University events. “It’s always a happy event, and it’s great to see everyone shopping and in a festive mood.
