The event also featured the University’s annual Diversity Recognition Awards, chosen by UMB’s Diversity Advisory Council and presented by UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD. Musical selections were provided by Vocally Charged, a performance choir from @greenstreetacademy, under the direction of Joseph N. Eldridge.

  • This month, 22 #UMBCUREScholars got a glimpse of what they could potentially accomplish during a special tour of @coppinstateuniversity.The journey toward #highereducation for these students started four years ago, when they became the very first cohort of the UMB CURE Scholars Program, a unique mentoring/STEM education program aimed at reducing racial disparities in public health by establishing a pipeline to careers in #STEM. The program is funded by a National Cancer Institute grant to the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Now in high school, these scholars have “graduated” to CURE Connections (C2). C2 is a continuation of the CURE program, funded by the @nigms_nih Science Education Partnership Award, that is specifically designed for ninth and tenth grade students. This visit to Coppin State is just one of many stops on the CURE Scholars' higher education tour. Earlier this semester they visited @towsonuniversity and in March they will be visiting @umbclife.

  • Shortly after earning her Master of Social Work from the @mdsocialwork in 2010, Nicole Mattocks’ work experience in Baltimore led her to wonder about the impact that physical disorder like graffiti, litter, or abandoned buildings could have on a person’s well-being. Through her years of studying at UMB, she had gained a base knowledge about how having access to green spaces and healthy, safe environments leads to overall positive community health.
Now, she’s applying that knowledge as she completes her doctorate in #socialwork, focusing on the relationship between the physical environment and urban green spaces of Baltimore’s neighborhoods and #mentalhealth outcomes, such as depression and anxiety.

  • On Oct. 16, 2018, #UMBaltimore made history with the dedication of its first public art installation, in partnership with @mdartscouncil.
.
.UMB’s new Health Sciences Research Facility III is now the home of Maryland’s newest public art. “Stochastic Interactions,” created by artist Eric Peltzer, is a 30 ft. tall kinetic wind sculpture suggesting the human form through the filter of a DNA molecule – reflecting the genome research taking place in the new building at The Institute for Genome Sciences @ummedschool.
.
.UMB President Jay Perman was joined by Maryland’s First Lady Yumi Hogan, artist Eric Peltzer, the Executive Director of the Maryland State Arts Council Ken Skrzesz, and Chair of the Maryland Commission on Public Art Catherine Leggett to unveil the sculpture. President Perman celebrated the occasion, noting that art enriches our experience and advances UMB’s mission to improve the human condition: “I hope every time the wind takes the arms of this sculpture and sends it spinning, we all feel the unique joy that art brings.” #WeAreUMB
